Back on the streets after a two-year COVID break, Manchester Day 2022 was well worth the wait.

Our post-pandemic return to the city centre saw Manchester buzzing once more – and shone a spotlight on our city’s children and young people.

We were joined in 2022 by a very special guest: Little Amal, a Syrian refugee who arrived in the city in 2021 after an 8,000km walk through 65 European cities, towns and villages. Having made Manchester her home in late 2021, Little Amal was out exploring on Sunday and joined in the Manchester Day fun.

Once again, we put environmental sustainability at the heart of Manchester Day, both through the events on the day and the ways in which we worked to reduce, reuse and recycle. All structures were either pushed, pulled, pedalled or powered by electricity – including, at the back, Manchester City Council’s first electric street cleaning truck.

  • ITV News
‘Thousands enjoy the parade and Little Amal’s return’
  • Hits Radio
‘20,000 people turn out for Manchester Day Parade’
  • Manchester Evening News
    ‘Manchester Day returns’
  • BBC North West
‘Thousands of people turned out in the city centre’

‘We are so glad to be back after the pandemic and we’re putting a big hug round Manchester – everyone wants to connect, everyone wants to celebrate.’

Councillor Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day
