Festival of the Sea was a celebration of history, community and the wonders of life on the water – delivered outdoors in Grimsby and online with our trademark mix of open-air performance and unforgettable spectacle.
The free festival took visitors on a tour through Grimsby’s historical connections to the sea. We launched the festival in 2021, then returned in 2022 for a second edition in collaboration with The Culture House.
The heart of the event was Festival Square, which hosted a free programme of vibrant street theatre, live music and dance from local and national artists. Food stalls celebrated Grimsby’s links to the sea through its world-leading seafood sector, while a series of heritage walks, talks and debates really brought the story to life – and encouraged everyone to think about sustainability.
Nature activities invited families to learn more about the wildlife around our waterways, Grimsby Minster hosted live DJs playing global sounds – and a series of online events meant that people far beyond the town could join us to explore Grimsby’s seafaring heritage.
