Direction flute (x5)
Weathervanes with a large tail that catch the wind and turn on a bearing. The nose pointing into the wind has a tubular flute with three notes. The vane keeps the flute at the right angle to create a constant tone even when the wind direction changes.
Anemomephone (x5)
Like on a weather station, three cups catch the wind and rotate. This turning motion spins a five-note offset tubular flute. It makes a rhythmical melody described as being like the sound of a wading bird.
Drum harp (x2)
A flat strap tensioned edge on to the wind vibrates creating a tone. This is amplified through the head of an 18” bass drum producing a drone.
Timpani harp (x2)
Two antique copper timpani are suspended in a free-floating rope-tension system. Raised off the ground on a three-legged tubular steel stand.
Attached to the centre of the timpani drumhead is a small hardwood bridge. It has holes for 8 nylon strings. A lyre shaped frame above the timpani has 8 nylon strings attached to it. The strings pass through the bridge to a system of tensioning reels. The strings are all tuned to the same note. As the wind blows, the strings vibrate invisibly, and harmonic sounds are produced. Described as a sound like a sci-fi choir. Tones that rise and decay with the wind. The sound is amplified by the timpani. Listeners can put an ear to the surface of the drumhead.
A tubular light atop the lyre downlights the sculpture.
Bamboo Wind Flutes (x6)
Tall bamboo with slots cut in their nodes. Bound with rope to long painted angle-iron stakes. People can walk into the circle and between the bamboo. Each bamboo is split uplit by 2 battery-powered spots.
