An Exploration of Cardboard Construction
Cardboard has been James Lake’s medium of choice for the last 15 years. Going beyond traditional materials and methods, his sculptures are the result of the fine crafting of inexpensive, common place and recyclable material.
Recent works have included commissions for Hotel Gotham, Manchester of two life size figurative pieces; 1920s style Butler and Bellboy. Last year he worked with Walk the Plank on the Rugby World Cup celebrations in Exeter; creating a 6 metre high cardboard totem pole.
Ingrained in James’ process is the desire to teach and demonstrate his working method so that, regardless of ability, everyone can access a way of realising ideas into a three dimensional form.
