About this event

Join designer Helen Davenport for an insight into her work as one of the UK’s leading carnival artists. Reflecting Afro-Caribbean, South American and European traditions in her designs, Helen will share tips, techniques and an overview of her career in this 2 hour informal presentation with lots of time for questions.

The ELEVATE programme, linked to Manchester Day, offers masterclasses and workshops led by outstanding artists. Sessions will not only provide creative practitioners with valuable learning opportunities to upskill but will also give support and inspiration for the years ahead.

Who are these masterclasses for?

These masterclasses are designed for artists and creatives, especially those interested in outdoor arts practice and new technologies. Priority will be given to practitioners in the North West.

ELEVATE is a Walk the Plank and Manchester City Council development programme supported by Arts Council England.

Masterclasses will be held in Salford at Walk the Plank's Cobden Works, 37-41 Cobden Street, Salford, M6 6WF.

What is Elevate?

ELEVATE is a creative practitioner and community leader development programme, for curious creative adventurers, wanting to gain and share know-how in outdoor arts. ELEVATE masterclasses offer free and subsidised practical workshops and stimulating talks by international and nationally significant outdoor artists – people Walk the Plank think we as a UK sector can benefit from meeting and learning from.

About the artist

Helen Davenport: artist, sculptor and carnival costume designer is currently making costumes for Notting Hill Carnival, St Paul’s Carnival Bristol, and has previously made work for numerous carnival troupes across UK.

A multi-skilled freelance artist established for 35 years in costumery & the arts, with 18 years dedicated to the carnival sector as a designer and producer of large-scale costumes featuring the integration of unique artwork within the design. A creator of three-dimensional installations, as well as site decor for festivals & props for corporate, private and world-class events: from the Dubai World Cup to showcasing carnival costumes for Nice & Viareggio Carnival tourist boards, helping to attract thousands of visitors to their annual events.

Extending beyond carnival productions her work includes murals, portraits, screen-printing & experimental work using textile & technology as the heart of inspiration. Sculpture is another skill – she works with willow, wire & tissue/ textiles leading to commissioned work including - Jimi Hendrix 18ft illuminated statue at “The Isle of Wight Festival 2007”. Helen is continuously involved in the community-sharing skills with workshops for all ages, cultures & abilities.
