ELEVATE’19 Spring Masterclasses: Outdoor Arts Performance

Spring is in the air and with longer and (hopefully warmer) days we're looking forward to another spring and summer of inspiring events in the great outdoors

So why not get yourself in fine fettle for the forthcoming season by developing your skills, techniques and experience alongside leading artists in their field.

Our Spring ELEVATE 2019 masterclasses not only provide great learning opportunities for creative practitioners interested in performance in the outdoor arts, but also gives you the chance to work with some leading names in event and parade design along with puppet making, silk painting for costumes and banners.

And finally, if you’re eager to find new ways of incorporating recyclable materials into your work, we have a wonderful new masterclass that with equip you with some smart skills and ideas on how to make your practice more sustainable.

ELEVATE 2019 - Masterclass' & Talk Details

WORKSHOP
Wednesday 24th April from 10am to 5pm
Imagine – Create - Animate with Kerith Ogden
Location: Cobden Works, 37-41 Cobden Street, Salford, M6 6WF

An opportunity to work with Kerith Ogden, Artistic Director of Handmade Parade, a celebratory arts company which specialises in community-focused parades and events. In this day-long workshop, you will have the chance to explore the design and animation process of making interactive puppetry for parade.

Cost: £40 with four free bursary places available to those who would not be able to attend otherwise.

Creating Dynamic Design with Hand Painted Silks with Ali Pretty
Location: Cobden Works, 37-41 Cobden Street, Salford, M6 6WF

Ali Pretty, the founding member and artistic director of international outdoor arts company Kinetika, will lead this day-long practical masterclass. You will have the opportunity to get hands on with creating and painting spectacular designs on silk for use as banners or costumes in outdoor performance.

Cost: £50 with four free bursary places available to those who would not be able to attend otherwise.

Festival Décor: How to turn a field into a fantasy with Cordi Ashwell
Location: Cobden Works, 37-41 Cobden Street, Salford, M6 6WF

This masterclass will give you the opportunity to meet Cordi Ashwell, Director of Decordia Events and hear about her fascinating take on outdoor event design, space transformation and how to harness creative skills in a commercial environment.

Creating Carnival without costing the Earth with Alison Duddle
Location: 
Mayfield Depot, Manchester M1 2QF

Cost: £40 with four free bursary places available to those who would not be able to attend otherwise.

In this new practical workshop, Alison will be sharing advice and ideas on how to make your art more sustainable, with an emphasis on choice of materials and exploring the process of deconstructing and recycling. These ideas will be explored through key techniques she uses in puppet and mask making, including creating clay sculpting for paiper mache, and basic wood carving. She will bring many examples of puppets from different productions so participants can explore construction methods, jointing and controls.

Building Bridges 

Want to learn more about the transformational educational outcomes of circus performance in a social and community setting?  Then don’t miss this hands-on talk about educational practices in the context of a social circus project with children and young people, presented by Vinicius Daumas who is joining us for Manchester Day from his home city of Rio.

Cost: £15 with four free bursary places available to those who would not be able to attend otherwise.

Roll up, roll up, for this unique opportunity to learn from Vinicius Daumas, Artistic Director and co-founder of Circo Crescer e Viver, a social circus company based in Rio de Janerio which brings together art and social transformation. During this masterclass, you will have the chance to learn how to form a team of educators for teaching/outreaching, discuss the power of circus, and explore the creative process of making a social circus show with practical exercises.

Due to the unique way Elevate is funded and run, each masterclass has an allocation of bursary funded, free places which available on application to support those who would not be able to attend otherwise. However, places are limited - book now using the links above to ensure you have a place.

Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and there is a waiting list.  If you know you no longer cannot attend after you have booked, please do let us know so that we can release your place to the next person on the waiting list.

For paid workshops, refunds are only available up to 7 days before the event.

Where are they held?

Spring 2019 masterclasses will be held in Salford and Manchester.  The three Salford-based masterclasses will be held at Walk the Plank's Cobden Works, 37-41 Cobden Street, Salford, M6 6WF.

Alison Duddle's masterclass will be held at Mayfield Depot Station, Fairfield Street, Manchester, M1 2QF
