An enchanting brief encounter on the lake between a Swan and a Peacock

On Saturday September 1st, the people of Manchester joined us both in the day and the evening, for a late summer experience as part of the Festival of Manchester featuring the proudest of peacocks and the most elegant of swans as they created a fleeting moment of fiery magic on the lake at Platt Fields Park.

During the day, families worked with our expert ‘peacock maker’ to create fantastic tail feathers to ensure he looked his very best for his evening encounter with the Swan.  Tail feather making workshops took place throughout the day from midday to 6pm at the Arts & Crafts tent.

As dusk falls, the peacock calls and people gathered together around the lake to catch the fleeting moment when the swan and peacock come together in a magical encounter featuring musical performance, fire, an illuminated swan and the most handsome peacock in the park.

We're delighted to have worked with the Manchester International Roots Orchestra including a singer, rapper and seven musicians to create the accompanying music for this enchanting evening encounter.

Swan Song has been created by Walk the Plank for the Festival of Manchester, a Manchester City Council event.
