Closing date: 21 June 2019

Job Description

This is Derby – Head Stage Manager / Show Caller

Can you lead a team of volunteers and call the show for our community-led, city-wide celebration of Derby on 13th July 2019?

#ThisisDerby is a unique project led by Derby County Community Trust, Derby’s Cultural Education Partnership and the City’s Sports Forum who, together, are providing opportunities for young people to take part in high-quality arts, sports and cultural activities.

There’s nothing to do in derby” is a one day event which celebrates the talents and achievements of the city’s young people in a vibrant takeover of Derby’s Market Place on 13th July 2019. Arts, culture and sport activities will bring the Market Place to life as young people share stories of their communities and inspire a city that actually does have a lot to offer. The day will conclude with a spectacular finale.

Outdoor Arts Experts “Walk the plank” have been appointed as Producer / Creative Director of “There’s nothing to do in Derby” and are looking to appoint a Designer to tie together 3 performance spaces within Market Place, whilst giving the event a festival feel.

The Narrative

Derby is a colourless, grey place with depressing headlines and negativity, surrounding its young people. A seed planted in the city’s urban jungles, a challenge to inspire a generation has been set and the growth of creativity is starting to bud, grow and blossom. Colour pulses through the veins of the city, in-search of identity and opportunity. Weaving together to face up to the challenge that will inspire a generation, who deserve to be heard and celebrated. Collaborations of Derby’s cultural and sporting organisations are reaching the young people that matter the most. Ambitions will be lifted, their self-worth encouraged, confidence developed and identity found. Their voices will be heard across the city.

The Site

The site will consist of two performance areas including a large thrust stage, a water feature and a removable dance floor situated in the centre of Market Place. Each will be dressed to the theme of an urban jungle and general site dressing will give the market place a festival feel. There will also be a procession through a pedestrian area, leading to Market place that will need to be clearly marked out.
