Manchester’s new Lord Mayor visits Wow! Workshop

We were delighted to welcome Manchester’s newly appointed Lord Mayor Carl Austin-Behan to our Manchester Day preview evening at our Wow! Workshop in the former Coronation Street studios in central Manchester.

Since April 26, when we first opened this herculean space, a mini city of outdoor arts creativity has sprung up by a whole range of artists and community groups, each responding to this year’s theme Eureka! – celebrating Manchester world-renowned reputation as a city ingenuity and inventiveness – and linking in with Manchester’s 2016 role as European City of Science.

Tuesday evening’s event, hosted by Manchester City Council, commissioners of Manchester Day (now in its 7th incredible year) gave the chance for the council and its sponsors to get a sneak preview of the wealth of creative expression is visibly evident throughout the whole workshop.

From Archimedes in his bath tub of inspiration to a giant magnet and this year’s 20 foot high Manchester Day mascot Albert² (Albert Squared), there was no shortage of creative makes for visitors to explore.

Councillor Pat Karney welcomed guests and the Lord Mayor to the workshop while Liz Pugh from Walk the Plank talked through the inspiration and theme for this year’s parade.

Guests were also given a sneak preview of the big new sound created by New Orleans-style street band Mr Wilson’s Second Liners in their exciting collaboration with the legendary king of rave Graham Massey.
