Now that we’re firmly installed at Cobden Works we’re embarking on a new programme of learning and training aimed at creating a new generation of talent, as well as further developing the skills of people who we’ve worked with over many years.So, come and join us on the next stage of our exciting journey into the world of outdoor arts with our  Spring 2018 Elevate programme - talks and workshops by renowned inter/national artists, designers and creatives from across the sector.

Instruments of Joy - creating a contemporary street band with Tim Hill
Half day practical workshop with Tim Hill

Get inspired by Tim Hill’s practical music making afternoon of exploration, as he takes you on a musical odyssey to tease out the sounds from the past that can help build the next generation of street band music.

Tim Hill’s, A Joyful Noise
A presentation exploring street band cultures, outdoor music making and celebratory noise

Tim Hill will present a cornucopia of musical genres across jazz and folk to explore where today’s contemporary street band culture comes from.  Exploring the idea of ‘noise’ in outdoor celebration and ritual. And examining the roles and function of street bands in today’s outdoor arts sector.

FIRETER’s Design & Movement Techniques for Character Creation
Two day practical workshop with Bulgarian FIRETER’s Plamen Ivanov & Rozaliya Mitrova

Bulgarian based FIRETER is the biggest shade and fire’ performance company in South East Europe, their work brings together costumes and ambitious constructions with stilt and fire performance. Over two days FIRETER founders Plamen Ivanov and Rozaliya Mitrova will share some of their key making and performing techniques with you.

Creating FIRETER street performance ensemble
Talk with Plamen Ivanov and Rozaliya Mitrova from Bulgaria’s FIRETER

FIRETER is Bulgaria’s foremost street ‘shade and fire’ performance company, and the biggest group of its kind in South East Europe. Its founder Plamen Ivanov and colleage Rozaliya Mitrova will tell us about their practice and their experience of working internationally in their ensemble.

Guérassim Dichliev’s Introduction to Visual Theatre and Mime Technique
Two half day practical workshops with Paris’s Guérassim Dichliev

Bulgarian born Guérassim Dichliev is one of Paris’s best loved mine artists, apprenticed under Marcel Marceau he became a member of Marceau's Troupe in 1997, and currently performs across the world in his solo shows.

In this two half day workshop Guérassim Dichliev will introduce the geometry of the body as a basic tool for performance in a street context. Focusing on three main principles; suspension, movement and rhythm.

Guérassim Dichliev’s ‘Out of Place’
Talk and performance with Paris’s Guérassim Dichliev

In this talk, Guérassim Dichliev will share his knowledge of the art of mime, helping us explore the value of non-verbal communication for outdoor arts.

A performance of 'Out of Place' will follow. Written and performed by Guérassim Dichliev, and directed by Eddy Castors. Its a show that came to life during the worst year of Guerassim’s life, giving rise to a simple, personal desire; “to create a show that can make anybody and everybody laugh”. Drawing Stories with Edward Taylor
A half day pratical workshop

Edward Taylor will deliver a half day workshop about visual story-telling. In groups you will use drawing to generate unexpected and surprising stories, inspired by finding connections between disparate images.

A survivors guide to being a ‘one man’ street performer: The Incredible lightness of being (funny)
Practical Workshop with Natalie Hunt

Sheffield based street performer Natalie Hunt is a solo street performer, who has perfected the art of making comic street performance as Madame Zucchini. This one day workshop is inspired by her experience of surviving as a performer across street, festival and cabaret.

Cost: £40 with some free bursary places available to those who would not be able to attend otherwise.

Due to the unique way Elevate is funded and run, each masterclass has an allocation of bursary funded, free places which available on application to support those who would not be able to attend otherwise. However, places are limited - book now using the links above to ensure you have a place.

Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and there is a waiting list.  If you know you no longer cannot attend after you have booked, please do let us know so that we can release your place to the next person on the waiting list.

For paid workshops, refunds are only available up to 7 days before the event.

ELEVATE’18 Spring Masterclasses: Outdoor Arts Performance

Now in its sixth year, ELEVATE is a creative practitioner and community leader development programme, for curious creative adventurers, wanting to gain and share know-how in outdoor arts. ELEVATE masterclasses offer free and subsidised practical workshops and stimulating talks by international and nationally significant outdoor artists – people Walk the Plank think we as a UK sector can benefit from meeting and learning from.

Spring ELEVATE 2018 masterclasses will focus on performance for outdoor arts.

ELEVATE is a Walk the Plank and Manchester City Council development programme supported by Arts Council England.
