Volunteer for Manchester Day 2017: Abracadabra

On Sunday 18 June, tens of thousands of people will fill the streets of Manchester when one of the North West’s flagship summer events takes place. Manchester Day is created by the people of Manchester, commissioned by Manchester City Council and produced by Walk the Plank, and we’re looking for enthusiastic people to play a key role in helping us bring the streets of this vibrant city to life with an incredible spectacle of music, colour and performance.

How you can get involved:

Creative support leading up to the event (May and June 2017)

The WoW workshop is the creative community hub designed especially for Manchester Day – it opens in the months leading up to Manchester Day. Wow is where artists and participants work on their creations, costumes and movement. WoW Weekends are also held at the workshop over 2 weekends leading up to the event, and serve as a chance to make preparations for the big day in a lively creative and collaborative atmosphere.

We need people to help and build structures, make props and embellish costumes. It’s a great opportunity to work with established carnival artists and get an in-depth look behind the scenes of one of the city’s biggest event of the summer. You can volunteer as little or as much time as you like, from a few hours to a few weeks. Just tell us your availability and we’ll let you know how and when you can help out.

If you’re particularly interested in helping out with WoW Weekends, the dates are:
WoW Weekend 1: 10am until 5pm on 20 & 21 May
WoW Weekend 2: 10am until 5pm 3 & 4 June

Volunteer roles on the day (Sunday 18 June 2017)

There are two ways you can get involved:

  • Communication support

The key part we need you to play is sharing the Manchester Day programme with the audience – this will involve giving out the free Manchester Day programmes and answering any queries people have about the day.  This is a vital part of the event so that everyone knows what’s happening, when and where. You’ll be the public face of Manchester Day so we need people who enjoy interacting with others The atmosphere will be very upbeat, you’ll have a great time helping out and you will receive a briefing prior to the event so you have all the information you need to be able to carry out your role.

As you’ll be positioned along the route or in one of the city’s Squares, you’ll be in the heart of the action, seeing the Parade and enjoying the atmosphere. Volunteers for this role will work in teams with a team leader to refer to for any support needed.

Volunteers for this role are needed from 10am to 3pm.

  • Creative Support on the day of the parade

We need people to help set up the parade at its start point in Manchester’s Castlefield area. You’ll play a vital part in on-the-day preparation and delivery, helping groups with floats and accessories and directing participants to their positions.

You’ll then get chance to be part of the parade itself, acting as an info point for participants, distributing water and sunscreen, or even carrying banners, flags and props. Or assist our Stage Managers in helping to bring the city centre squares alive with performances, decorations and installations.

After the parade, you’ll guide participants back to WoW, collecting parade accessories and costumes, and props and working with the creative team to organise our storage space.

Volunteer times between 9am – 5pm to be arranged with you.

About you

We are looking for creative, confident, friendly and approachable volunteers who are willing to roll their sleeves up and get stuck into all kinds of activities. You’ll be happy working on your own initiative or as part of a group and be happy to work both outdoors and with the general public.

We can’t guarantee good weather on the day, but we can promise an unmissable experience where you’ll learn new skills, meet new people and enhance your CV.

Briefings

All volunteers will receive a briefing so you have all the information you need to be able to carry out your role.

Communications support: You will be briefed on the event day.

Creative support: You will need to attend a briefing on Wednesday 14 June at 6pm at the Manchester Town Hall.

Expenses

We offer travel expenses of up to £5 and provide lunch for the WoW Weekends and event day. More information will be provided on sign up.  Those volunteering on Sunday 18 June will also receive a Manchester Day 2017 T-shirt.
