Manchester Diwali

The story of Rama and Sita unfolds in Albert Square

"Albert Square provides a fantastic outdoor performance space for a show like this and we were delighted to work with the Indian Association of Manchester to create a theatrical spectacle as the finale highlight to their Diwali celebrations. The attraction of a show like this is that it appeals to people of all ages and provides key moments for audience participation.

As part of our Diwali 2017 celebrations we returned to Manchester’s Albert Square for the retelling of the dramatic and much-loved tale of Rama and Sita.

The celebration of light over darkness and good over evil is perfectly encapsulated in this charming piece that is designed to be adapted to a range of outdoor arenas.

As in previous years, Manchester’s illuminated gothic town hall provided the backdrop to our show which formed the finale element to an afternoon of activities and an early evening parade.  To bring an added element of spectacle Sita arrived into the performance space in Albert Square on our moving mechanical Bengal Tiger where she remained in situ for the dialogue elements with Rama.

Animating a show like this presents a range of dramatic possibilities and here we used lighting, pyrotechnic punctuation points and music to help convey the narrative, culminating in a finale pyrotechnic display fired from the roof of Manchester Town Hall.
