It all started with a boat…
Who’d have thought back in 1992, when we first persuaded a bank to finance the purchase of an old Norwegian ferry to transform it into Europe’s first touring theatre ship, we’d be sailing our way towards becoming one of the UK’s foremost outdoor arts companies.
Nearly 25 years on and while our ship is no longer with us, our taste for artistic adventure knows no bounds. Today, Walk the Plank is a collective of land-lubber outdoor arts fanatics who collaborate to dream up, create and produce outstanding moments of outdoor theatre and spectacle. Some of them have also led to nice shiny awards appearing on our mantelpiece too.
We’re still based in Salford, near Manchester, in the North West of England, but our vision and ambition is to bring our highly spirited Walk the Plank outdoor arts experience to all points of the compass, both nationally and internationally.
Storytelling is at the heart of everything we do, and the arena for our work is the great outdoors. From a tiny village square or a fishing harbour to the broad ambitious canvas of an entire city, our aim is to bring people and communities together to help them gain a sense of pride and a sense of place through public celebration.
As we head towards our 25th anniversary in 2017, and prepare to move into an exciting new multi-purpose outdoor arts complex in Salford, our vision to become an internationally significant player in outdoor arts is as strong as ever. But we’ll never lose sight of the fact that we originally set sail from Glasson Dock all those years ago, grew up sailing around the British Isles, and that the exciting things we do can be delivered to a small community of people in a village square or thousands of people in a city, anywhere.
